What's the meaning of 'Dancheong'?

Dancheong is a traditional Korean painting which features (is characterized as) the harmonized patterns or colors using twelve colors. As Dancheong conveys dignity and authority, it is usually applied to sanctuary buildings where sacred divine beings are enshrined like this temple. And also it serves the practical purpose of protecting surfaces against weathering.

However, Dancheong is much more than just these qualities. Harmonizing colors creates the image of an ideal world, where everything is in harmony. For Daesoon Jinrihoe, Dancheong is an expression of religious faith and devotion to the Supreme God. Therefore, all the Dancheong painting in the temple was carried out by disciples, who could freely participate in this work.

The sacred spaces created by Dancheong are the result of collective efforts wherein many devotees cooperated with one another. Although a few members of Daesoon Jinrihoe do have formal artistic training, most of the disciples who have performed this work have never attended art school.
